Not all AI features in an LMS carry equal value. These are the six categories worth evaluating rigorously, in descending order of practical impact for most L&D teams.
1. Adaptive learning paths
The platform adjusts the sequence, depth, or pace of learning content based on each learner's demonstrated performance, prior knowledge, and progress velocity — rather than delivering the same programme in the same order to everyone.
What good looks like: The system skips content a learner has demonstrably mastered (based on assessment performance, not just self-reporting), surfaces harder material earlier for high performers, and adjusts pacing for learners who are falling behind — automatically, without L&D team intervention per learner.
What to watch for: Many platforms describe rule-based branching logic as "adaptive learning." True adaptive learning requires a learner model that updates in real time based on multiple signals, not a fixed decision tree. Ask vendors to demonstrate what happens when a learner fails a mid-programme assessment — does the path actually change, and how?
2. Content recommendations
The platform surfaces relevant content — from internal libraries, curated external sources, or connected content providers — based on the learner's role, skills profile, current programme, and learning history.
What good looks like: Recommendations that are specific enough to be useful (not just "popular in your department") and that update as the learner's skills profile and job context change. The recommendation engine should be able to explain why it surfaced a particular item.
What to watch for: Recommendation engines trained on aggregate popularity data often recommend the same content to everyone in a role — which is barely better than a curated playlist. Ask vendors how recommendations are personalised beyond job title and department.
3. Predictive analytics and at-risk detection
The platform identifies learners who are at risk of disengagement, programme failure, or compliance deadline breach — before they miss a milestone, rather than after. It surfaces these alerts automatically to L&D teams and line managers.
What good looks like: Risk scores based on multiple signals — login frequency, submission rate, assessment performance trajectory, time-to-completion against cohort norms — with configurable alert thresholds. The alert should include enough context for a manager or tutor to take a meaningful next action, not just a flag that a learner is "at risk."
What to watch for: Platforms that show RAG-rated dashboards are not the same as platforms with predictive models. A RAG status based on whether a deadline has been missed is retrospective. Genuine at-risk detection uses forward-looking signals to identify risk before a deadline is breached.
4. AI-assisted content generation
The platform uses large language models or similar AI to help L&D teams author new learning content — generating quiz questions, summarising source material, drafting module outlines, or converting documents and videos into structured learning objects.
What good looks like: A workflow that meaningfully reduces the time from subject matter expert input to publishable learning content — with clear human review steps before content goes live. The AI should be able to generate content in your organisation's voice and format, not generic prose.
What to watch for: AI-generated content that isn't reviewed before publication creates accuracy and brand risk. Evaluate the review workflow, not just the generation capability. Also assess whether the generated content can be version-controlled and updated when source material changes.
5. Natural language reporting and analytics
L&D teams and managers can ask plain-English questions about learning data — "Which teams have the lowest completion rate for the data protection module this quarter?" — and receive immediate, accurate answers without exporting spreadsheets or building custom reports.
What good looks like: A conversational interface that correctly interprets ambiguous questions, handles date ranges and organisational hierarchies correctly, and surfaces anomalies proactively (not just when asked). The output should be actionable — not just a table of numbers.
What to watch for: Natural language interfaces that work reliably on demo data often degrade on real organisational data with messy hierarchies, partial records, and non-standard naming conventions. Ask to run your own questions on the vendor's demo environment — don't just accept a scripted demonstration.
6. Skills intelligence and gap analysis
The platform maintains a dynamic skills profile for each learner — updated based on completed learning, assessment performance, and (in more advanced platforms) connected HR data — and surfaces skills gaps relative to role requirements, career paths, or organisational capability targets.
What good looks like: A skills framework that can be configured to your organisation's competency model (rather than a generic taxonomy), gap analysis that distinguishes between skills that need development and skills that simply haven't been assessed, and a clear connection between identified gaps and available learning content.
What to watch for: Skills intelligence is one of the most oversold features in the market. Many platforms offer a skills framework that requires L&D teams to manually map every content item to every skill — which is a significant ongoing overhead. Ask vendors who maintains the skills-to-content mapping and what happens when new content is added.
