What EU AI Act Article 4 requires
- Proportionate AI literacy: Article 4 requires organisations to ensure their staff have AI literacy "to the extent needed for their role, tasks, and the AI systems they use." This is not a one-size-fits-all requirement — it is role-based.
- UK applicability: The EU AI Act applies to any organisation deploying AI systems that affect EU-based individuals, customers, or data subjects — including UK businesses operating across the EU.
- Evidence required: Regulators will expect evidence of training delivery, competency records, and that staff understand the AI systems they work with, including limitations and risks.
- High-risk AI systems: Where you deploy high-risk AI (e.g. HR screening, credit assessment), Article 4 literacy obligations are stronger — staff interacting with these systems must have enhanced understanding.
- Timeline: Article 4 obligations became applicable from February 2025. Full broader enforcement from August 2026. UK businesses should not assume post-Brexit exemption where EU exposure exists.
