All 5 UK AI training funding routes explained
1. AI Skills Boost programme
Free AI foundation training for all UK adults. Government target: 10 million workers by 2030. Available now through approved Skills England delivery partners. No employer contribution required at foundation level.
2. Growth and Skills Levy
Levy-paying employers (payroll £3m+) can fund AI apprenticeships and units directly from their DAS account. The Level 4 AI and Automation Practitioner standard and AI-focused units both qualify. New 12-month expiry from April 2026 adds urgency.
3. Apprenticeship units (April 2026)
Shorter levy-funded modules (30–140 hrs) including AI Foundations and AI and Data for Business. Levy payers use DAS; non-levy employers pay 5% co-investment. Available to all ages — no minimum age requirement.
4. Skills Bootcamps
Flexible courses up to 16 weeks. Government funds 70–90% of costs; employer pays 10–30%. Multiple AI and data bootcamps available. Employer must offer an interview or development opportunity on completion.
5. Co-investment (non-levy)
Non-levy employers pay only 5% of apprenticeship training costs; government pays 95%. Available for full apprenticeships and (from April 2026) apprenticeship units. Includes 100% funding for apprentices under 25 from August 2026.
