This guide has been checked against the live Skills England occupational standard and the revised version 2.1 apprenticeship assessment plan. That matters because older summaries describe a different version, a shorter programme and a fixed end-point assessment model that no longer matches the current documents.
ST1512 v2.1: the current facts
ST1512 is the Level 4 Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automation Practitioner apprenticeship. Skills England lists version 2.1 as approved for delivery and available for starts in the Digital route.

The standard was approved for delivery on 10 December 2025. That approval date is different from the version date: the live assessment-plan revision created v2.1 for starts from 22 May 2026. It is therefore inaccurate to describe ST1512 as having launched in March 2026.
The 18 months is a typical duration, not a promise that every programme will have the same timetable. Likewise, the 420-hour compliance minimum is not a standalone curriculum. Providers still need an individual training plan that reflects the apprentice's prior learning, occupational duties and the funding rules in force on the start date.
Check the version before enrolment
The start date determines which published version applies. Skills England's version log shows:
- v2.1: assessment plan revised; earliest start date 22 May 2026; no published latest start date.
- v2.0: earliest start date 10 December 2025; latest start date 21 May 2026; retired for new starts.
For a new start on or after 22 May 2026, use v2.1 and its revised assessment plan. Do not silently replace the documents assigned to an apprentice who started under v2.0: confirm the registered standard version and follow the applicable transition and funding rules. In delivery systems, store the version against the individual learner rather than treating “ST1512” as a single unchanging template.
Before recruitment, curriculum mapping or assessment preparation, record the apprentice's planned start date, the ST1512 version and the assessment organisation's current specification. This prevents v2.0 assessment assumptions from being carried into a v2.1 programme.
Who the occupation is for
The occupation can sit in many sectors because its focus is operational improvement through AI and automation, not model research or software engineering from first principles. Practitioners may be embedded in operational teams, digital support roles or change-delivery functions, or work for a consultancy or service provider.
They analyse systems and processes, identify productivity opportunities, and select, configure and integrate suitable digital solutions. The live standard explicitly includes low-code and no-code tools, AI-driven automation, workflow platforms, application programming interfaces and connectors. Practitioners also test and improve solutions, support safe and responsible adoption, communicate with technical and non-technical colleagues, and consider the effect of change on the workforce.
Typical job titles published with the standard include AI integration officer, automation enablement consultant, digital automation specialist, digital operations technician, process automation analyst, technology operations coordinator and workflow solutions assistant. The practitioner is not expected to lead a team, but does own projects or tasks that deliver operational value.
Both a new recruit and an existing employee can be suitable where the job provides enough opportunity to perform the occupational duties. Age, sector or a job title alone does not establish eligibility or occupational fit. Providers should complete an initial assessment, recognise relevant prior learning and confirm that the role can generate sustained, substantive learning.
KSBs and the six assessment outcomes
The occupational standard contains the authoritative knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs). Curriculum and assessment mapping should use those individual statements, not a provider-created list of generic AI topics. The revised assessment plan groups coverage into six outcomes:
- Strategic and ethical adoption of AI automation. Supporting leaders, aligning solutions with organisational values, making a benefits case, managing change and considering ethical, workforce, social, economic and reputational effects.
- Solution design and development. Selecting and configuring AI and automation tools and platforms, designing integrations, and matching a solution to business need, scalability, accessibility and strategic fit.
- Testing, evaluation and iteration. Assessing viability, testing solutions, gathering user feedback and improving reliability, security and accessibility within technical and user constraints.
- Governance, assurance and ongoing risk management. Applying governance and assurance frameworks, documenting and mitigating risk, considering algorithmic impact, and supporting compliance, transparency and accountability.
- Stakeholder engagement and workforce enablement. Working with diverse stakeholders, communicating technical concepts accessibly, addressing concerns, and producing training and support resources that help people adopt a solution.
- Continuous improvement and change delivery. Identifying productivity and performance opportunities, delivering sustainable change, measuring outcomes and reporting where automation does or does not improve a process.
Practical coverage should therefore go beyond prompt writing or exposure to popular AI products. Relevant work can include process and workflow mapping; low-code or no-code configuration; prompts; APIs and connectors; data preparation; testing and user feedback; risk and assurance documentation; cost-benefit evidence; training; and the monitoring of workforce, equality, security and performance effects. Providers should maintain a direct, version-controlled map from activities and evidence to the published v2.1 KSBs.
How the revised v2.1 assessment plan works
Version 2.1 uses the revised apprenticeship assessment framework. The plan requires all six assessment outcomes to be assessed and makes a project mandatory. It does not prescribe the old fixed combination of a project report and a professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio.
The assessment organisation sets the assessment design. Where further assessment is needed alongside the project, it selects from the methods permitted by the plan:
- presentation;
- simulated task;
- professional discussion;
- portfolio; and
- question and answer.
Consequently, a professional discussion or portfolio may appear in an assessment organisation's specification, but neither should be presented as an automatic second component for every apprentice. The project's format, evidence requirements, timing and the combination of any additional methods must come from the appointed assessment organisation's approved materials.
Assessment may take place at any appropriate point during the programme. Providers should plan assessment and learning together from the outset, while preserving a genuine assessment of occupational competence. The assessment organisation remains responsible for the reliability, validity and accuracy of the assessment, including where the plan permits provider or centre marking.
From ongoing readiness to the gateway to completion
Under the revised terminology, apprenticeship assessment replaces “end-point assessment”, the assessment organisation replaces “EPAO”, and the final checkpoint is the gateway to completion. This is more than a change of labels: assessment can take place during the programme rather than beginning only after a gateway.
Provider, employer and apprentice should hold ongoing readiness conversations throughout delivery. The gateway to completion is reached only after the applicable requirements have been satisfied, including required training and assessment, English and maths where applicable, any mandated qualification, and employer verification that the required behaviours have been demonstrated sufficiently during the apprenticeship.
The employer's behaviour verification is a distinct judgement. Providers should give employers the published behaviours and retain a clear record of the verification, but should not invent a separate behaviour assessment where the revised requirements assign verification to the employer.
Funding: apply the rules for the start date
ST1512 has a maximum funding band of £18,000. The provider and employer agree the price for eligible training and assessment; the band is the maximum amount that can be funded, not a guaranteed payment. The employer pays any amount above the band maximum.
The contribution route is not a timeless “employer pays 5%, government pays 95%” rule. Check the funding year in which the apprentice starts:
- Starts up to 31 July 2026: apply the 2025 to 2026 rules, including levy-account funding or the co-investment and full-funding exceptions that apply to that employer and apprentice.
- Starts from 1 August 2026: under the published 2026 to 2027 rules, a levy-paying employer without enough account funds normally pays 25% and government pays 75%; a non-levy employer's new start aged 16 to 24 is government-funded up to the band maximum; and a non-levy new start aged 25 or over normally follows 5% employer and 95% government co-investment.
Eligibility, prior learning, transfers, exemptions and other funding conditions still apply. Record the planned start date and employer type before quoting a contribution, then verify the live rule set before enrolment.
Provider delivery checklist
Control the version. Register and map each learner to ST1512 v2.1 for starts from 22 May 2026, while retaining the correct documents for any earlier v2.0 start.
Validate the job. Use the published duties and KSBs during initial assessment. A role that only uses an AI assistant occasionally, without process analysis, solution configuration, testing, governance and stakeholder activity, is unlikely to provide the full occupational breadth.
Build an individual programme. Start from the typical 18 months and 420 minimum compliance hours, then adjust the training plan for prior learning and the apprentice's development needs without diluting full occupational competence.
Appoint the assessment organisation early. Obtain its v2.1 specification before finalising curriculum sequencing or evidence processes. Do not build delivery around a project-report and professional-discussion template inherited from v2.0.
Provide realistic technology access. Apprentices need safe opportunities to map processes; configure AI, automation and integrations; handle data; test and iterate; document assurance; and support users. Tool choice should serve the occupational outcomes rather than turn the programme into training for one vendor.
Prepare employers for behaviour verification. Make the six published behaviours visible in reviews and ensure the employer understands its verification responsibility before the gateway to completion.
Employer checklist
Define a real occupational role. Map the proposed job to the standard's duties and KSBs before recruitment. The standard is broad, but the apprentice must be able to own meaningful AI and automation tasks that improve operations.
Provide access and supervision. The apprentice needs access to appropriate systems, data, stakeholders and safe test environments, with line-manager time for feedback, risk escalation and change support.
Expect a project, but check the assessment specification. A project is mandatory under v2.1. The assessment organisation determines its design and whether additional methods are required; the employer should support suitable work without assuming that every workplace deliverable automatically satisfies the assessment brief.
Support affected people. The occupation explicitly covers adoption, training, workforce impact, fairness and responsible change. Give the apprentice permission to consult users, surface concerns and recommend that automation should not proceed where evidence does not support it.
Confirm funding against the actual start. The £18,000 figure is the maximum funding band. Employer contribution rules change on 1 August 2026, so obtain a start-date-specific price and funding explanation from the provider.
For a new ST1512 start, check four items before committing: the learner's start date, version 2.1, the employer's ability to provide the full occupational scope, and the appointed assessment organisation's current design. Those checks prevent most of the errors still circulating in older ST1512 guidance.
